  1. This document contains three sections -
  2.  
  3.   o an announcement of the POV CD-ROM project.
  4.   o instructions on how to contribute.
  5.   o information on how to be notified when it's available (a very FAQ.)

  7.                   POV-Ray CD-ROM - CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
  8.  
  9. A CD-ROM (to be titled 'The Official POV-Ray CD-ROM') is to be released in
  10. a few months from Walnut Creek CD-ROM. This CD will contain oodles of neat
  11. stuff relating to POV-Ray, including some never-before released scene files,
  12. lots of source code, utilities, textures, 3d-models, images, the works. The
  13. CD will target not only the DOS world but the UNIX platforms as well. It will
  14. be a ISO9660 format disk with Rock Ridge extensions. If sufficient interest
  15. is generated a Macintosh-specific version will be produced.
  16.  
  17. I am calling for contributions from interested POV users. I am specifically
  18. looking for -
  19.  
  20.   o POV utilities, especially those with source.
  21.   o scene files !
  22.   o POV images of _good quality_
  23.   o unofficial compiles.
  24.   o textures.
  25.   o 3-d models.
  26.   o animations.
  27.   o papers, documents, dissertations, etc. on 3-d graphics or raytracing.
  28.   o patches or modifications to the POV source that are of interest.
  29.   o anything else relevent to POV-Ray.

  31. Contributions may be uploaded to wcarchive.cdrom.com ; see the next section 
  32. (how to contribute) for more details.

  34. Time frame : I need all contributions by the 25th of September.
  35.  
  36. Note : This CD-ROM is being prepared by a single team member, and is not in
  37. that respect a team effort. However, it has team support and will aid further
  38. POV development.

  42.           *****  HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE POV CD-ROM *****

  44. DEADLINE : 25 September 1994.

  46. Please ftp to wcarchive.cdrom.com and cd to pov/cdrom-contributions.

  48. Once there, choose an appropriate subdirectory as you can't write into the
  49. top-level one. Please be sure to read the message file in the top level
  50. directory. Basically, I _must_ have something with the upload that identifies
  51. both it and you. If you upload foo.bar, please also upload foo.bar.txt.  The
  52. format of the text file should be as documented below. If you want your work
  53. to get on the CD, please make sure this is done !
  54.  
  55. Note that you will not be able to see your uploads after they've been done.
  56. This is because the directories are write-only and do not allow reading.
  57.  
  58. ALL contributers whose work is accepted and placed on the CD are entitled to 
  59. one free copy. Make sure you join the CONTRIBUTERS mailing list (use the same 
  60. method as for the ANNOUNCE list documented below) and you will be notified how 
  61. to get your free copy when the CD is released. NOTE : this really only applies
  62. to people who contribute their own work. If you have available something that 
  63. you feel should be on the CD and the original author is not available or is 
  64. unknown, please email me at the address at the end of this document. Generally,
  65. I can't accept a submission if it's not yours.

  67. If you're uploading a scene file, please provide a 160x120 (1:1 aspect ratio) 
  68. version of it. Ditto for large images, and also for objects (DXF or whatever.)
  69.  
  70. If you upload a utility, it would be nice if you included a 320x240 (1:1)
  71. image that demonstrates what the utility can _do_. This only applies to ones
  72. that create some sort of POV output file. 
  73.  
  74. For image uploads, I prefer JPEG or TGA. Please don't gamma correct them.
  75. Also, as far as resolution is concerned, 800x600 is best, with 1024x768 OK.
  76. As mentioned above, please generate all images with an aspect ratio of 1:1.

  78. For _all_ uploads, please include a write up like the following -

  92. The LONG section is of course for a longer description. The CLASS is the
  93. general category, UTILITY/SCENE/IMAGE/TEXTURE/OBJECT/PAPER/THESIS etc.

  108. You MUST also certify that the work is your original creation, that you have 
  109. the right to grant permission for its distribution, and state that you grant 
  110. us that right. If the work you want to contribute is not yours, please email 
  111. me first. Also, ensure that a valid email address is somewhere in the text file.

  113.          *** HOW TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE POV CD-ROM's RELEASE ***

  115. Numerous people have mailed me asking about how to know when the POV CD-ROM
  116. will be released. The easiest way to do this is to do the following -
  117.  
  118. email povray@yarrow.wt.uwa.edu.au
  119. subject is unimportant
  120. in the body of the message, place the words
  121.  
  122. JOIN ANNOUNCE
  123.   or
  124. JOIN ANNOUNCE as myname@myemail-address
  125.  
  126. you will get a notification if you are sucessful. if you don't hear back
  127. within a day, it is possible that your reply address bounced on us. [This 
  128. happens more often than you may think.]

  130. make sure you don't have any other text before the JOIN command or your
  131. message will be rejected by the list manager program. also, it's best to
  132. have no text after it either ... other than a standard '-- ' signature.

  134. When the CD-ROM is available I'll mail everyone on this list.
